Have you ever wondered why we love food so much?

Why is it the subject of so many stories and movies, and why can't we stop thinking about it even when we're not hungry?

In this course, we're going to explore these questions through pop culture. We'll be taking individual dives into some of your favorites and focusing on elements like plot, characterization, world designs, and dialogue to understand how the magical realities in which these stories exist and unfold, speak to and relate to food. From hard-hitting issues like food insecurity during wartime to satirical commentary on the direness of processed foods and obesity, you'll be surprised to find how far what is considered "food media" extends beyond cooking shows or recipe videos. We hope that by the end of this course, you'll have a thoughtful approach to interpreting and connecting how popular media are able to express and comment on a myriad of complex food topics in creative ways.
